It’s hard to imagine a time when this was the state-of-the-art equipment, but there was.

Steam shovels played a big role in the construction of the railroads, among other things. Here we see it working alongside teams of horses.

They steam shovel fell out of use in the 1930s when they were replaced by diesel-powered shovels.
